Job Opportunity: Environmental Economics Intern
Company: Karisia Walking Safaris and Tumaren Camp
Location: Laikipia, Kenya
Position: Environmental Economics Intern
Duration: July 1st - August 31st 2025]
About:
Karisia and Tumaren Camp are dedicated to wildlife conservation and sustainable land use in Laikipia, Kenya. We operate on private land that borders community-owned "Group Ranches" managed by Laikipia Maasai community members. The Group Ranches were set up in the 1960s by The Kenya Government to secure traditional pastoral land from subdivision and to simultaneously protect that land from overgrazing. These communities practice pastoral livestock care and engage in various other revenue-generating activities, such tourism and sand collection for construction. As decision-makers for their land and governance, they require reliable data to guide their land-use planning and governance to insure a prosperous future. These communities are underserved in many ways and none have had the help of independant economists, accountants or business managers who can help them to analyse their returns on their own investments.
Role Overview:
We are seeking an Environmental Economics Intern to assist in collecting data on land use and governance in order to present to communities data in graphical form so that they can make informed decisions about their land and their membership. The intern will provide essential data and economic insights to support decision-making while fostering positive engagement with all community stakeholders. The goal is to provide the communities with information that can help foster a bright and equitable future.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct research on sustainable land-use models applicable to the region.
Analyze economic impacts of conservation and land-use initiatives such as rotational grazing.
Engage with community stakeholders to discuss their ideas of what their future should look like.
Assist in developing reports and presentations on different land-use strategies, contrasting long term goals and short term goals.
Provide data-driven insights to support governance (Membership, Voting or Livestock Ownership and Numbers).
Record work and presentations in video format for documentation and outreach.
Educate students about aspects of their own economy and how to measure it
Qualifications:
Pursuing or recently completed a degree in Environmental Economics or Accounting / Economics (With an Interest in Nature), Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
Strong analytical and research skills.
Excellent communication, diplomacy, and report presentation abilities.
Experience in or ability to record and document work through video.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Interest In Adventure, Wildlife and Conservation.
Interested candidates should submit their application here. The Successful candidate will be provided with full board accommodation in a spacious tent at our base at Tumaren Camp. This is within our 3000 acre conservation area that boasts the highest diversity of large mammals in Kenya. We are neighbors to several of the Group Ranches to the North.
