Red-winged Starling de-ticking Klipspringer

red-winged starling de-ticking Klipspringer

This is only the second time I've seen a Red-winged Starling de-ticking an animal. In both instances it was a Klipspringer. This might reveal some kind of lost connection to a related bird family since Oxpeckers and Starlings are like sister groups. Oxpeckers are considered to be "living fossils", a silly term for an organism that has hit upon a good design and remained unchanged for a long period (think, Crocodiles, Dragonflies, Turtles or Cycads). I wonder if the shared behavior between the Starling pictured here and her oxpecking sisters can trace itself back to a common ancestor. I would love to hear from anyone who has observed this behavior elsewhere. Please let us know. Cheers, Jamie Christian
