3 Night Tumaren Walking Safari

The tall rocky outcrop will be visible for miles before you arrive. Its called Nyasura and it is certainly sacred ground, used for millennia by hunters and others seeking shelter. Ancient graves, flints and pounding stones called boluses are all in evidence around the rocks and particularly the caves. And these remains that may have been handled by humans in the past hundreds of thousands of years pale when contrasted with the rock itself, formed about 800 million years ago. The kopje is a gneiss and is part of outcrops referred to as the Mozambique belt, a chain of ancient mountain roots exposed from Mozambique up to Eritrea. In the west of Laikipia much of these ancient mountains (once the size of the Himalayas) have been covered by the Laikipia plateau a 12 million year lava flow that came up over the rift valleys walls.

We will be camped beside Nyasura and in the evening after a jaunt about we will scale its slopes for a view and a sundowner. The remainder of the safari traverses a rich Acacia bush country that thrives with plains game as well as the predators that like to eat them. It is not uncommon to run into a Lion, Leopard, Hyena or Wilddog along the course of this safari.
