2 Nights Mobile, 1 Night Tumaren Camp

Your Charter flight brings you into a nearby airstrip which offers a nice but brief drive to the camp through mostly conserved country as well as our small market town of Kimanjo. This part of Laikipia offers grand views of the country and its rich geologic, as well as cultural history. The wildlife too is diverse, being the richest in the country for large mammals.

Loseramoru

1 Night. Day 2: Loseramoru to Paul’s Rock:

9km Ascent 175M

Loseramoru:

Loseramuru is a proud kopje standing tall over a rich bushlands below. The granitic rock here is over 800 million years old and was formed under the ground without oxygen when all the continents were together. These remaining rocky hills are all that remain of mountains that once towered as high as the Himalayas. To the western view, on the other hand, lies the flat Laikipia plateau that was formed only 12 million years ago from lava overflowing from the splitting rift valley. The geology gives us an additional sense of timefullness and a sense of how much life here has been influenced by these slow-moving but monumental movements of earth.

We will begin our three day mobile walking safari at Loseramoru. After arrival, lunch and a period of mid-day rest, we will head out on a small walk-about to get a feel for the terrain. We may only go 3-4 km, looking for tracks, game and anything we can find. We will end our hike atop the kopje behind camp for a drink and to gain a bit more perspective on where we are heading for the remainder of the trip.

The next day we will begin our walk. We will establish then our typical day which entails an early start, a hearty breakfast while the team takes down the camp and then our walk onward to the next camp. We always plan to get to our next camp just before lunch. When we arrive the camp will be set as the pack camels will have gone on a more direct route while we will have followed what game and tracks we might find. Accompanying us will be a few riding camels. These animals have saddles so that anyone can try a ride but more importantly these camels can help to carry our snacks, water, extra bags and camera equipment. After lunch we usually have a rest or a read before going on an afternoon toodle with a sundowner at the end.

Paul’s Rock

1 Night. Day 2: Paul’s to Tumaren Camp:

Tumaren Camp

1 Night. Departure the next day.

Tumaren Camp was originally just the home of James Christian and Kerry Glen (the owners of Karisia Walking Safaris) and it has 6 beautiful outfitted guest tents. Each tent is spacious and overlooks a busy waterhole visited by Elephants, Giraffe, Oryx, Common Zebra, Grevy’s Zebra and warthogs. Guests staying at Tumaren put together each day based on their interest. While the guided walks are the specialty at Tumaren, James, Kerry, Gabriel and the other guides are equally comfortable game-driving for the best game and photographic opportunities. Picnics, brunches and sundowners also feature in each day at Tumaren as well as opportunities to try our excellent rock climbing routes or possibly a trip to the local Masai market if the schedule permits.
